Sugar came to us in 2010 from Gallup McKinley County Shelter, where she had been found tied to a post near the reservation. She was full of milk for her pups, but no pups were found. Although sweet as Sugar, she was special needs in that she could be dog-selective and reactive in high-energy settings. In the years we had her, only one application came in, and the home itself was almost perfect, with lots of comfy couches, but it had no fenced yard and many wandering dogs in the area. She remained in our care and showed a particular affinity for small dogs and puppies we fostered. Sugar was diagnosed with mast cell cancer and survived for many years with multiple surgeries. She became the companion to my elderly mother and her other senior dog and several cats and left us peacefully in 2022.
